2025 in Review: The Milestones of The Year

This has been a year of meaningful achievements for Mercan in Portugal. In addition to the celebration of the 10th anniversary since the arrival in the country, we continued our path of expansion from North to South.

With the opening of three new hotels, the expansion of one, and the reopening of another, we successfully marked our arrival in the Lisboa area while strengthening our presence in Porto and the Alentejo Coast. Each opening reflects our long-term vision, confidence in Portugal, and commitment to creating lasting value for investors, partners, and local communities.

April 2025 – Reopening of Hotel Indigo Albufeira

After a few months of modernizing the interiors, Hotel Califórnia reopened as Hotel Indigo Albufeira by IHG. A new design aligned with the city and its atmosphere – relaxed, vibrant, and deeply rooted in the sea and the beach.

July 2025 – Opening of A~mar~ello Hotel Praia Santo André, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Between the Atlantic Ocean and the Santo André and Sancha Lagoons, this new hotel on the Alentejo Coast brings to life the calm of the region. With a design inspired by the local landscape and colors, this is the perfect place to unwind during summer days.

August 2025 – Expanding in Porto

In the banks of the Douro River, facing the city of Porto, Origine Porto Gaia, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, opened to tell new (love) stories. With a sophisticated design, inspired by both Portuguese and French traditions, this hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia and its restaurant – Cais-me Bem- became a unique retreat.

On the other side of the river, in the Lapa neighborhood, the Renaissance Porto Lapa Hotel opened its new wing, becoming an even bigger and better hotel for all our guests, both in leisure and business. With a fully equipped spa by Cinq Mondes, the hotel is already a landmark in Porto’s hospitality landscape.

September 2025 – Mercan’s First Hotel in the Lisbon Area

Moxy Alfragide Lisboa is located in the business hub of Amadora. It has an extravagant design, carefully thought out to answer both business and leisure travelers, and even the digital nomads who aim for a relaxed, modern place. Located in the southern area of the Lisbon District, it has great access to public transport that connects visitors to Lisbon’s city center. Moxy Alfragide is Mercan’s first hotel in operation in the area, having a significant impact on the strategic expansion throughout the country.

With these achievements, Mercan now has 15 hotels in operation in Portugal, expanding its portfolio even further in the country. For 2026, we will continue investing in the local communities, bringing a lasting impact for all.
