TRIBE will make its Iberian Peninsula debut in 2027 with a hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia, developed by Mercan Properties in partnership with Accor. The brand focuses primarily on design and dynamic shared spaces.

In many hotels, the lobby is little more than a place to pass through while handling the usual check-in formalities. TRIBE decided to do exactly the opposite, turning that space into the center of the entire experience, a meeting point where guests can work, grab a coffee, enjoy a cocktail at the end of the day, and mingle with locals and fellow travelers. That philosophy is now coming to Greater Porto in 2027, with the opening of the brand's first hotel in Portugal and across the entire Iberian Peninsula, developed by Mercan Properties.

The future TRIBE Porto Gaia will be built on Avenida da República, just a few steps from the Dom Luís I Bridge, in one of the busiest areas of Vila Nova de Gaia. The project is the result of a partnership between Accor and Canadian group Mercan Properties, and marks another chapter in the transformation of the city's riverside front, which in recent years has attracted new hotels, restaurants, and cultural spaces. But TRIBE's arrival in Portugal is more than just another hotel opening, the brand has set out to challenge some of the hospitality industry's traditional conventions.

"TRIBE was born in Perth in 2017, the result of a vision by Mark and Melissa Peters, with the idea of creating hotels aligned with the lifestyle of the modern traveler, combining contemporary design, functionality, and an accessible experience," explains Pauline Oster, TRIBE's Vice President for Europe and North Africa. The Australian couple, with decades of industry experience, believed there was room for a concept positioned between economy hotels and luxury boutique properties. The idea was to cut excess and focus investment on what truly matters to guests, design, comfort, technology, and inviting common areas. "The brand is built on a very clear principle: proving that design, comfort, and an accessible price point can coexist," Pauline Oster points out.

The concept proved to be a success. The first hotel opened in Perth, Australia, in 2017. Two years later, Accor brought it into its lifestyle portfolio, and today TRIBE counts 27 operating hotels and more than 40 projects in development, spread across cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Budapest, Düsseldorf, and Perth.

Although each property has its own identity, there are common elements that run through the entire network. The design follows a "mix-and-match" logic that combines contemporary pieces, textured materials, and signature furniture, with each hotel developed by a different designer, though all follow three pillars defined by the brand.

Rooms are intentionally compact, prioritizing functionality, premium bedding, and amenities over excess space. The brand works, for example, with Kevin Murphy products and favors a curated selection of comfort essentials. Still, the true heart of TRIBE hotels lies outside the rooms. From its inception, the brand was designed as a gathering place. "TRIBE was also designed as a place to live and connect, where the spaces naturally encourage interaction and bring together travelers and residents around a shared social experience," says Pauline Oster.

That is precisely the concept Mercan Properties and Accor will bring to Gaia. The future hotel will feature 125 rooms and will be developed by Nano Design. Its centerpiece will be the so-called "Social Hub," a multifunctional space designed to work throughout the day. "The Living Space will be the heart of the hotel, conceived as a multifunctional space for working, socializing, eating, or relaxing throughout the day," the executive explains.

In addition to the breakfast restaurant, TRIBE Porto Gaia will feature a central bar serving specialty coffee during the day and cocktails at night, a Grab & Go area for quick meals, meeting rooms, a gym, and several flexible areas adapted to new work and leisure habits.

Programming is also expected to play an important role. Exhibitions, DJ sets, cultural gatherings, and initiatives such as the Vinyl Club are part of the brand's strategy to attract not only guests but also local residents. The choice of Gaia for TRIBE's Iberian debut was no accident. According to Pauline Oster, the location near Porto's historic center and the Port wine cellars offers unique conditions for the brand's positioning. "Porto attracts a highly diverse international traveler profile, increasingly interested in local experiences, culture, and lifestyle," she says. "It also lends itself particularly well to weekend urban getaways in Europe."

Location was another decisive factor. TRIBE favors central areas and dynamic neighborhoods, where urban life becomes part of the guest experience. For that reason, the proximity to the Dom Luís I Bridge, the Gaia wine cellars, and the historic center was seen as a strategic opportunity for the brand's entry into the Portuguese market. One of the property's main draws will be the rooftop, with its panoramic terrace offering views over the Douro River and the historic Port wine cellars.

For Accor, this opening represents just the beginning. The group considers the Iberian Peninsula a priority market for the brand's expansion and says it remains attentive to new opportunities in both Portugal and Spain. "TRIBE's arrival in Greater Porto shows that hospitality continues to evolve to meet a new kind of traveler, someone who no longer looks for just a room to sleep in, but a place where they can work, meet people, discover the city, and feel part of it, even if only for a weekend," the executive concludes.
